How Kydel Works

Kydel helps you save on groceries by showing you real store flyer deals with your personalised Net Effective Price — the true cost after stacking cashback, loyalty points, and sale discounts. Our credit card rankings are fully algorithmic — computed from publicly available card data using our proprietary NEP scoring methodology. We do not accept payment for placement in our rankings.

Recommendation Score (0–100)

When you have cards in your wallet, Kydel computes a personalised recommendation score for every card in the catalogue:

score = category_match × 0.40

+ nep_performance × 0.30

+ fee_value × 0.15

+ complementarity × 0.15

Category Match (40%)

How well this card's earn rates cover your primary spending categories — especially grocery, which is Kydel's core use-case. Scaled so the card with the highest grocery earn rate in the catalogue scores 100.

NEP Performance (30%)

Estimated annual dollar value from rewards, assuming $500/month grocery spend. Uses the same effective earn-rate methodology that powers our deal-level savings display — so your card recommendation aligns with your actual savings.

Fee Value (15%)

Net annual value after subtracting the annual fee. A $120/yr card that earns $360/yr in rewards scores higher than a $0 card that earns $60/yr. Cards where the fee eats most of the value are penalised.

Complementarity (15%)

Rewards diversity in your wallet. If you already have strong cashback coverage, Kydel boosts points/travel cards that fill a gap — and vice versa. Cards you already own are excluded from recommendations entirely.

“Best for Grocery” & Category Rankings

Category rankings (Best for Grocery, Best for Travel, etc.) are computed from each card's effective earn rate for that category:

  • Cashback cards: direct percentage (e.g., 5% = 5.0)
  • Points/miles cards: multiplier × point value × 100 (e.g., 5× pts × $0.01/pt × 100 = 5.0% equivalent)

This normalises all reward types to a comparable cashback-equivalent percentage so you can compare apples to apples.

“Best Card for This Store”

When you browse a specific store's flyer, Kydel identifies which card in your wallet earns the most on grocery purchases. If a card in the full catalogue would earn significantly more, we show the potential upgrade with estimated annual savings (based on $500/month grocery spend).

Data Sources & Integrity

  • Grocery deal data is sourced from publicly available retailer flyer circulars. Our team obtains official digital flyers through legitimate public channels, and proprietary technology extracts deal information (product names, prices, discounts, validity dates). Every deal is reviewed by an operator before going live.
  • Flyer page images are displayed in-app so you can browse deals visually — just like flipping through a real flyer. Images are shown with full retailer attribution and are automatically deletedfrom our servers after the flyer’s validity period expires (plus a short buffer). We do not archive or redistribute expired promotional content.
  • Credit card data is sourced from official bank and issuer public product pages (e.g., amex.ca, td.com, scotiabank.com). Each card stores a source_url and last_verified timestamp for audit traceability.
  • Kydel does not use web scraping, automated browsing, or any unauthorised data collection for grocery deal data. All deal facts represent publicly advertised prices and promotions.
  • Every deal is tagged with its source retailer and flyer validity dates. Every upload is logged with a timestamp and operator identifier for full provenance tracking.
  • Rankings are never influenced by affiliate revenue. Some credit card “Apply” links may be affiliate links — if you are approved for a card, Kydel may earn a referral commission from the issuer. This does not change the algorithmic score, the ranking order, or the Net Effective Price of any deal.
  • Deals marked “Sponsored” or “Featured” indicate a brand has paid for highlight placement. Net Effective Price is calculated identically for sponsored and non-sponsored deals. The NEP engine has no awareness of sponsorship status.

Current Limitations

  • Monthly spending caps:Some credit cards cap bonus rewards at a monthly or annual spending limit (e.g. 4% cashback on the first $1,500/month). Kydel calculates rewards per item. If you are near your card's cap, your actual rewards may be lower than shown.
  • Receipt-verified savings: Savings shown are estimates based on flyer prices and card reward rates. Actual savings depend on in-store pricing at the time of purchase.
